Trillions of periodical cicadas are expected to emerge across the U.S. this spring and summer in an insect event which has not happened in over 200 years. For the first time since 1803, two different broods of cicada will emerge across more than a dozen states, mating and laying millions more eggs, starting in May. The giant insects hibernate as groups in either 13 or 17-year cycles.
